Wheel spacers – what to check when choosing

A spacer widens the track and corrects the wheel offset (ET). It is safe when it is hub-centric, has the right PCD and centre bore, and the wheel is fitted with bolts of the correct length.

Key points

  • KLUCWERK spacers are made of anodised 6061-T6 aluminium and are hub-centric.
  • Bolt length = working length of the original bolt + spacer thickness; thread and seat as original.
  • Re-check wheel tightness after 50–100 km.

What spacers are for

  • They widen the track – the car looks more planted and dynamic.
  • They correct too high an offset (ET) of ill-matched wheels.
  • They provide clearance between the wheel and the brake caliper.
  • A wider track can improve stability in corners.

What to compare between spacers

  • Stated aluminium grade (e.g. 6061-T6) – not just “aluminium”.
  • Hub-centric design and a centre bore matching the car’s hub.
  • PCD and thread matching the car, e.g. 5x112.
  • Hub lip height – with slip-on spacers the hub lip must not be higher than the spacer allows (e.g. max. 13 mm for KLUCWERK 15 mm spacers), otherwise the spacer will not sit flat on the hub.
  • Bolt length and seat – add the spacer thickness to the working length of the original bolt; the seat (conical, ball, flat) must match the original.

Fitting

Tighten the wheels with a torque wrench to the torque specified for the car. Re-check after 50–100 km. Before buying, calculate the offset change in an ET calculator – you will see how far the wheel moves out relative to the wheel arch.

Questions and answers

Are wheel spacers safe?

Yes, if they are hub-centric, have the right PCD and centre bore, and the wheel is fitted with bolts of the correct length and torque.

How do I choose bolt length for a spacer?

Add the spacer thickness to the working length of the original bolt. Thread and seat must be the same as the original.
